En 1957 se estrenó en Nueva York el musical West Side Story compuesta por el magnífico Leonard Berstein sobre la idea del bailarín, coreógrafo y director norteamericano Jerome Robbins quien inspirado por el Romeo y Julieta de William Shakespeare publicado por primera vez en 1957 imaginó el musical como una translación de la historia al Nueva York de aquel entonces, sustituyendo a las familias Capuleto y Montesco por dos bandas rivales, los Jets y los Sharks a cuyas familias pertencen los actores principales que en la película que dirigiría el mismo Robbins junto a Robert Wise en 1961 se llaman Maria, interpretada por la sensual Natalie Wood y Tomy, Richar Beymer. Personalmente creo que el genio Bernstein no dejó para la ocasión ningún tema menor, sin embargo son tres los temas más destacados o conocidos de West side Story, América, María y este Tonight.
