The Sweet Spot. The Plastic Pals.

Dicen los componentes de The Plastic Pals que llevaban un millón de años viajando por la galaxia hasta que finalmente se encontraron en Estocolmo, en la primavera de 2005. No vamos nosotros a discutir esta teoría ni mucho menos, pero sí que nos saltamos la galáctica parte previa y arrancamos justo en el momento en el que Hakan “Hawk” Soold, cantante, guitarra y compositor se unió a Anders Sahlin, un guitarrista con el que había tocado en 1980 en el grupo Piglet, al batería Olov Oqvist y al bajista Bengt Alm.

El sonido de The Plastic Pals es una atinada mezcla de bandas de ardientes guitarras como Television, The Dream Syndicate o Flamin´ Groovies, algo de la Velvet Underground de Lou Reed, unas melodías mágicas y con un tinte atractivamente oscuro y una sección rítmica enigmática y apasionante. Escuchar a esta banda sueca es revivir el espíritu del rock, la llama que arde con Hendrix, Gram Parson, Beatles, The Long Riders, Alex Chilton, Hank Williams... Un curioso y atinado revoltijo de rock and roll, raíces americanas, algo de suave power pop, desarrollo indie pop, tradición melódica sueca... Personales, diferentes, ingeniosos y muy atractivos. Así son The Platic Pals.

Su debut discográfico tuvo lugar en 2006 con la publicación del Ep titulado “The Band That´s Fun To Be With”. Dos años más tarde se estrenaron con el álbum “Good Karma Café”, en el que colaboraba el teclista de Green On Red, Chris Cacavas. Siempre ha habido una estrecha relación entre The Plastic Pals y el denominado Nuevo Rock Americano de mediados los 80. La banda sueca ha tocado y colaborado con luminarias como Chuck Prophet, de Green On Red, Syd Griffin de The Long Ryders o Steve Wynn de The Dream Syndicate. Su música tiene mucho de aquel movimiento. Este primer Lp les abrió bastantes fronteras y su música sonó en emisoras de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido y media Europa, incluyendo por supuesto España.

Su siguiente trabajo se titula “Turn The Tide”, publicado en 2013, y está producido por Chris Cacavas, un excelente músico, socio de Chuck Prophet en Green On Red y que también pasó por Giant Sand, y un gran productor. El resultado final es un magnífico disco que suena variado, enigmático y conmovedor. Un paseo por el lado oscuro de las melodías más envolventes. Turbadores y deliciosos.

La canción “The Sweet Spot” está incluida en su último disco y el videoclip es un montaje con imágenes de los años 50 de la famosa chica pin- up Betty Blue, una atractiva y sofisticada joven de Tennessee, habitual modelo del fotógrafo y director de cine estadounidense Russ Meyer.
