La lista de bandas de primera categoría que ha dado la ciudad inglesa de Manchester es de enmarcar: The Hollies, Herman´s Hermits, Oasis, Stone Roses, Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Buzzcocks, Magazine, Simply Red, James... Y lo mejor de todo es que el filón no se acaba, que continúa. Una prueba de ello es este grupo formado gracias a una iniciativa de un funcionario algo hippy que organizaba conciertos para niños, con el fin de formar nuevas bandas. Eso fue lo que llevó a unos quinceañeros, Matthew, Ross, Adam y George, a juntarse para tocar en una de esas sesiones infantiles. Empezaron en un local haciendo versiones de clásicos del punk y del pop hasta que un día, un poco por casualidad, compusieron una canción, su primera canción. En ese momento decidieron que la música sería su futuro.
El nombre del grupo tardó en llegar. Primero fueron Talkhouse, luego The Slowdown, Drive Like I Do, Bigsleep y así hasta que un día Matthew Healy, el cantante, propuso algo especial, una idea inspirada en unos garabatos que encontró en la contraportada de un libro de poesía Beat, una fecha “1 June, The 1975”. Con un nuevo y definitivo nombre empezaron a funcionar en enero de 2012 y lo hicieron para fichar con el sello independiente Dirty Hit y grabar su primer Ep. Un mes más tarde The 1975 daba su primer concierto oficial como banda telonera en la gira por Inglaterra del combo irlandés General Fiasco.
La trayectoria de The 1975 pinta bastante bien. Antes de lanzarse a la grabación de un álbum decidieron editar hasta cuatro Ep´s y otros tantos singles. Cada disco ha ido ganando posiciones entre el público, la crítica, los medios y las listas de ventas. Esa era la intención de la banda, ir paso a paso, poco a poco, introducirse en el mercado y comprobar si su propuesta interesaba y si obtenía una buena respuesta. El objetivo estaba conseguido.
El Lp de debut por fin llegó en el otoño de 2013 y ha contado con la producción de Mike Crossey, quien previamente había trabajado con los “super guays” Arctic Monkeys, entre otros. El sonido final es claro y fuerte, bien equilibrado, limpio y un excelente soporte para la personal música de The 1975. Lo suyo es una atinada mezcla de pop de guitarras, rock alternativo, unas gotas de punk, a veces unos ritmos bailables, cierta concepción de pop electrónico pero sin electrónica. Sus canciones hablan de temas muy propios de la música rock, como son el amor, el sexo, las drogas, la muerte, el miedo, la esperanza, la urgencia juvenil, etc. Sin duda son una banda con un gran futuro. Y "Girls" un "cancionón".
