Hemos visto en incontables ocasiones a través de series y películas los típicos bailes que se celebraban en los institutos de Estados Unidos allá por los años 50. Aquellas reuniones de estudiantes recibían el nombre de The Hop (el baile) y daban pie a todo tipo de historias y muchas canciones, una de ellas fue esta “At The Hop” que popularizó en 1957 el quinteto de Filadelfia Danny And The Juniors, que con este tema alcanzó el Número 1 de las listas de éxitos en enero del año siguiente y se mantuvo en el Hit Parade durante siete semanas, más que cualquier otra canción en 1958.
Danny Rapp, Dave White, Frank Maffei y Joe Terranova, que en sus primeros pasos se hacían llamar The Juvenairs, empezaron a cantar juntos cuando tan sólo tenían entre 13 y 14 años y su primera aparición en público tuvo lugar en el show televisivo de otra estrella de la canción Pat Boone. White escribió la canción junto al productor John Madara, quien fue el primero que la grabó con el título de “Do The Bop”. Madara, que tenía un contrato con Prep Records, llevaba la voz solista y Danny And The Juniors hacían el acompañamiento. La idea era hacer una canción que tuviera un piano similar al “Whole Lotta Shakin´Goin´On” de Jerry Lee Lewis. El resultado de la grabación se lo enseñaron a los responsables del sello que no mostraron mucho interés, así que volvieron al estudio para hacer una nueva toma y entonces se decidió cambiar el Bop (un intento de popularizar un tipo de baile) por algo que sí estuviese llamase la atención de los jóvenes estadounidenses. Tras algunos cambios en la letra surgió “At The Hop” y esta vez fue Danny quien hizo la voz solista. Acertaron.
El grupo Sha-Na-Na, una pandilla bastante simpática que hacía alocadas versiones de temas de los 50, tocó este tema en el mítico festival de Woodstock de 1969, justo antes de que saliera al escenario Jimi Hendrix. Esta canción también se incluyó en una estupenda película “American Graffiti”, dirigida por George Lucas en 1973, por lo que se volvió a poner de moda y a sonar en las radios.
Además de con este “At The Hop” Danny And The Juniors entraron tres veces más en el Top 40, incluyendo su hit “Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay”, que fue su único éxito en Reino Unido. Y lo más asombroso, aunque con cambios en la formación, la banda sigue en activo; desde 1955, año de la creación del grupo, hasta nuestros días. Increíble.
Por cierto, estos bailes tan populares de los institutos también eran conocidos como “Sock Hops” o “bailes de calcetines” porque habitualmente se celebraban en el gimnasio y los encargados del centro escolar obligaban a los chavales a quitarse los zapatas para que no se rayara el suelo de parquet. Por eso se deslizaban tan bien y las pistas lucían tan brillantes.
