Inicialmente Boy & Bear era el proyecto en solitario de Dave Hosking, cantante, guitarrista y compositor, pero poco a poco la solitaria idea primaria fue tornándose en un plan más ambicioso que ha terminado convirtiéndose en una banda y en una de las revelaciones musicales más interesantes de los últimos años.
Definitivamente constituidos como quinteto en Sidney en el 2009, publican su disco de debut “Moonfire” un par de años después y con el obtienen un gran reconocimiento de público y crítica, así como varias importantes nominaciones y algunos premios en su país natal, como el de compositor más innovador, single y álbum del año, mejor grupo, artista más rompedor... en fin, que se lo llevan todo.
Recientemente han publicado su segundo disco, “Harlequin Dream”, en donde se incluye la canción “Southern Sun”, que ha sido grabado en Australia y mezclado en Seattle por Phil Ek, quien ha hecho excelentes trabajos con Band of Horses y con Fleet Foxes.
Si el primer Lp sonaba más folk indie, con ribetes de rock, y quizás más natural, en éste nuevo trabajo han hecho un viaje al sonido californiano de los años 70, de donde han tomado la calidez y sensualidad de algunas grabaciones de Fleetwood Mac, por ejemplo. El sonido ahora es más redondo y completo. El disco entero es una auténtica gozada y tiene esa casi imperceptible huella australiana, ese sello de la música hecha allí, que deja entrever un espacio despejado y abierto, muy abierto.
Boy & Bear estarán de gira por Europa la próxima primavera, aunque por desgracia de momento no han incluido España en sus planes.
