Grabada en el otoño de 1985 e incluida en el álbum “The Queen Is Dead”, que se publicó en junio del 86, fue descartada como sencillo de ese Lp en favor del corte “Bigmouth Strikes Again” . Sin embargo, en 1992, cuando la banda ya se había separado, salió como single de apoyo de “...Best II”, el segundo disco recopilatorio con lo mejor del grupo.
Aunque la introducción es muy parecida a la versión que hacían los Stones del tema de Marvin Gaye “Hitch Hike”, según el guitarrista de The Smiths, Johnny Marr, tomaron la idea de la canción “There She Goes Again” de The Velvet Underground, que también está basada en la composición de Gaye. Lo hicieron porque entonces ya daba un aire muy intelectual decir eso de que la Velvet era una de sus influencias.
Junto al personal y muy identificable sonido habitual de The Smiths, destacan unos exquisitos arreglos de cuerda que evocan un sollozo y una letra, de Morrisey, el cantante, conmovedora, romántica y, hasta cierto punto, trágica. En ella, el protagonista, echado de casa y sin lugar a donde ir, reflexiona, sentado en el asiento del copiloto del coche de su amante, sobre el amor, la ansiedad, el deseo... Un arrebato de desesperación que le lleva a decir que si un autobús de dos pisos o un camión de diez toneladas se estrellase contra ellos, sería un placer y un privilegio morir a su lado. Muy James Dean en “Rebelde Sin Causa”, pero sublime.
Se han hecho numerosas versiones de esta canción, desde el guitarrista de Oasis, Noel Gallagher, a las californianas Dum Dum Girls, pasando por Anberlin, Eurythmics, The Magic Numbers, Neil Finn, Nada Surf o los españoles Mikel Erentxun y Xoel López con su banda Deluxe.
En ceremonia inaugural de los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres en 2012, el pebetero con la llama sagrada se encendió justo después de sonar ésta canción. Los británicos siempre han sabido elegir estupendamente la música, su música, para cada ocasión.
