La psicodelia siempre es saludable y más cuando la maneja alguien que la personaliza, la sitúa en su tiempo y le da un aire de actualidad, de modernidad bien entendida. Ese es el caso de la banda belga Robbing Millions que ya tiene listo su primer álbum, el cual saldrá a la venta el próximo 25 de noviembre a través del sello y distribuidora internacional PIAS y que llevará por título el nombre del grupo.
La banda de Bruselas, Bélgica, Robbing Millions está formada por el cantante Gaspard Ryelandt, el guitarrista y segundas voces Lucien Fraipont, el teclista Daniel Bleikolm, el bajista Leo Campbell y el batería Jakob Warmenbol. En 2014, Lucien y Gaspard decidieron formar una banda. Los dos se conocían desde niños y su amistad se había construido a lo largo de los años. Uno, el cantante, se dedicaba a dibujar historietas y a hacer caricaturas, mientras que el otro, Lucien, tocaba la guitarra en una formación jazzística de improvisación, y juntos escribieron unas cuantas canciones que, con mucha calma, decidieron grabar en una maqueta casera. Esta actividad terminó adquiriendo forma de un EP al que titularon “Ages And Sun” y que les permitió ir haciéndose un hueco en la escena local. Muy pronto, el nombre de Robbing Millions empezó a ser conocido y apareció en varios festivales, como Le Printemps de Brujas o el Paléo Festival, entre otros. A estas alturas ya han sido teloneros de bandas como Babyshambles, Girls In Hawaii o Metronomy.
Previamente a la publicación de su álbum de debut, Robbing Millios lanzó a finales del pasado mes de agosto un primer sencillo con la canción “8 Is The Figure That I Like The Most”. En esta, como en sus anteriores canciones, así como en todo lo que hasta el momento han ido dando a conocer, la banda belga ofrece una peculiar mezcla de psicodélica, indie pop y funk, lo que proporciona un sonido que se presenta tan bailable como burbujeante. Sus guitarras pueden recordar a los acordes más brillantes de Scrítti Politti, con ecos muy ambientales y creadores de resonantes espacios, y también a Mew y sus punzantes ritmos. No es, por tanto, muy complicado asociarles con nombres como los de Tame Impala, MGMT o Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Por si fuera poco, sus letras son también atractivas, punzantes e inteligentes. “He estado ocupado escribiendo canciones para nadie. Es de madrugada y creo en mí mismo”.
Su nuevo videoclip corresponde a la canción “In The No Air”, en el que exploran la noche en la ciudad, capturando su espíritu de anti-rockstar. La canción es una oda a la canción “Free Will And Testament” de Robert Wyatt y describe a una pareja en plena crisis que no es capaz ni siquiera de permitirse una pequeña fiesta. “Cuando salgo me imagino en una película. Soy el héroe que ha perdido mucho protagonismo”.
