Escrita por uno de los mejores músicos que ha dado el Reino Unido, Nick Lowe, y por su socio Ian Gomm, “Cruel to be kind” debió aparecer inicialmente en el disco “It´s all over now” del grupo Brinsley Schwarz, en el que ambos militaban. Desechada en el último momento, quedó pendiente de publicación y no vio la luz hasta la edición del segundo álbum en solitario de Nick Lowe “Labour of lust” en junio de 1979. Un mes después salió como single y se encaramó en lo alto de las listas británicas y americanas.
En un momento de la obra, Hamlet le dice a su madre “I must be cruel only to be kind”, “debo ser cruel sólo para ser bueno”. De ahí salió la frase que da título a ésta canción que han versioneado Marshall Crenshaw, Letters to Cleo o Kurt Baker entre otros muchos y que ha sonado en unas cuantas películas y series.
El videoclip, uno de los primeros que emitió la MTV, es una humorística parodia de la boda de Nick Lowe con Carlene Carter, hija de June Carter e hijastra de Johnny Cash. El chofer de la limusina es otro enorme músico inglés, Dave Edmunds.
